There are now approximately 685,000 PAs and NPs represented across national workforce and claims datasets — including more than 461,000 Nurse Practitioners and more than 190,000 Physician Associates — representing approximately 40% of all U.S. healthcare providers (POCN Group national dataset, 2024).

This is the fastest-growing prescriber segment in U.S. healthcare.

Growth projections from HRSA and the Bureau of Labor Statistics point to sustained expansion through 2037:

• BLS: NP employment projected to grow ~40%, PA ~28% vs. physician growth of 3-4%

HRSA: NP supply to grow ~65% by 2034; PA supply to grow ~18%

Combined PA/NP supply projected at ~895,220 by 2037, narrowing rapidly toward physician parity (~956,750)

Physician supply, by contrast, is growing at only 3-4% over the same period, constrained by residency capacity and demographic retirement trends. The gap between physician growth and PA/NP growth is widening every year.

A defining characteristic of this workforce is specialty mobility.

Approximately 78% of surveyed PAs and NPs have practiced across more than two specialties during their careers, enabling rapid redeployment across therapeutic areas as patient need evolves. Unlike physicians, who typically commit to a single specialty after residency, PAs and NPs move fluidly between primary care, urgent care, behavioral health, dermatology, and other clinical areas.

For pharma marketing and agency teams, this means three things: audience sizing models built around physicians are systematically undercounting the prescribing universe; HCP targeting strategies need to account for clinicians who move across therapeutic categories within a single career; and forward-looking commercial plans must factor in the PA/NP segment's growth trajectory through 2037.

The AAPA and POCN Group joint analysis includes the full workforce trajectory data, geographic distribution analysis, and specialty concentration breakdowns that planning teams need to build accurate, forward-looking PA/NP engagement strategies.
