The scale of PA and NP prescribing reflects their significant role in patient care delivery.

In 2024, PAs and NPs accounted for 35.8% of all active prescribers nationwide, and 33.9% of every filled prescription claim in the U.S. That equates to prescriptions filled for more than 112 million patients.

PAs & NPs: 35.8% of active prescribers | 33.9% of all filled Rx claims | 112M+ patients

These findings are reflected in prescribing patterns across many of the most commonly utilized therapies in the U.S. healthcare system.

The composition mirrors physician prescribing across high-value therapeutic areas:

Atorvastatin (59.78M claims)

Levothyroxine (53.61M claims)

Amlodipine (47.59M claims)

Albuterol (45.65M claims)

Lisinopril (42.01M claims)

Semaglutide (41.97M claims)

Atorvastatin, levothyroxine, amlodipine, albuterol, lisinopril, and semaglutide rank in the top medications across both NP/PA and physician groups, demonstrating broadly consistent prescribing patterns for the most common therapies.

For pharma teams:

More than one-third of all filled prescription claims in 2024 originated from PAs and NPs. Combined with their growing presence across specialties and care settings, these findings reinforce the importance of including PAs and NPs in educational, engagement, and patient support strategies.
