Get instant access

June 03, 2026

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Associates (PAs) are reshaping the future of healthcare delivery, and their influence continues to grow. In this first-of-its-kind joint report from the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) and POCN Group, an IQVIA Digital business, healthcare leaders gain a behavioral and data-driven view into the expanding clinical, prescribing, and leadership impact of these providers across the U.S. healthcare system.

Drawing on national medical and pharmacy claims, HRSA and BLS workforce data, state-level policy analysis, and a nationwide survey of 368 actively practicing NPs and PAs, the analysis covers approximately 720,000 licensed clinicians, including more than 504,104 NPs and 215,545 PAs.

Highlights include:

•Scope of Practice. More than half of U.S. jurisdictions now grant NPs full or conditional practice authority; PA licensure compact expanding.
•Workforce Evolution. 504,104+ NPs and 215,545+ PAs now represent nearly 40% of U.S. healthcare providers, with growth outpacing physicians.
•Clinical Footprint & Patient Reach. In 2024, 38% of U.S. patients received NP/PA care; 25%+ of medical claims across key therapeutic areas.
•Prescribing Trends. NPs and PAs account for 35.8% of prescribers and 33.9% of all filled prescriptions, reaching 112M+ patients.
•Payer Mix & Claims Contribution. Higher Medicare and Medicaid share than physicians, reflecting NP and PA roles in primary care and underserved settings.
• Survey Insights. 63% of NPs and PAs report full prescribing autonomy; 60% share treatment information with colleagues, including physicians.
•Care Delivery. 10% of NPs and 12% of PAs hold formal leadership roles; 5% are practice owners, at physician parity.
